Sedation Dentistry

At Mackay Dental Sedation Clinic, we provide sedation to ensure a comfortable and stress-free dental experience.
We offer a range of options to suit different needs, from mild relaxation to IV sedation and general anaesthesia. Our trained team will assess your health and comfort preferences to recommend the best method for your procedure.
INTRAVENOUS (IV) SEDATION
What is IV Sedation that we provide at Mackay Dental Sedation clinic?
- IV sedation involves giving you an injection of sedative drugs through a cannula into a vein in the arm or hand. These sedative drugs make you very relaxed, sleepy and comfortable.
- IV sedation in dentistry helps you relax if you are anxious or you require more complex dental procedures like wisdom tooth extractions or implant surgeries.
- With IV sedation, we can put you in a dream-like state during your procedure, allowing us to complete our work while you feel minimal discomfort with no anxiety.
Who can benefit from IV sedation?
Patients with dental anxiety
Dental anxiety varies among individuals ranging from minimal fear to severe anxiety. Past negative experiences at the dentist can trigger anxiety, hindering cooperation during procedures. This prevents many people from receiving dental care that they absolutely need. IV sedation offers relief by inducing a relaxed state, ensuring comfort throughout the treatment. Many patients experience little to no memory of the procedure, making future visits easier and less stressful.
Patients with special needs
IV sedation is beneficial for patients who struggle to remain still during dental procedures. Individuals with special needs or certain disabilities that affect their ability to sit still for extended periods can benefit from sedation dentistry
Patients requiring long and complicated dental procedures
For some patients, having lengthy dental appointments or complicated surgical procedures like wisdom tooth extractions can be uncomfortable. IV sedation offers a relaxing and comfortable alternative for such treatments, ensuring a more pleasant experience overall.
Patients with gag reflex
Certain patients suffer from gag reflex. This can be triggered during dental treatments, potentially slowing down or even stopping the procedure. IV sedation reduces the reflex, allowing for uninterrupted treatment as the patient remains relaxed.
Which dental procedures can be done under IV sedation?
Dental treatments under IV sedation can range from simple checkups and cleans to more complicated surgical procedures like wisdom tooth extractions and implants.
What are other alternatives to IV sedation?
If for any reason IV sedation is not suitable for you, at Mackay Dental Sedation clinic we have other alternatives (these alternatives are only offered for tooth extractions and surgical procedures)
1- Nitrous Oxide or Happy Gas
A popular option for patients with dental anxiety, nitrous oxide helps you relax while remaining conscious throughout the procedure. It’s safe and can be an effective choice.
2- General Anaesthesia in a hospital setting
For more extensive surgeries or for patients not suitable for IV sedation, general anaesthesia in a hospital setting is an option. Under general anaesthesia, you’ll be completely asleep and unaware during the entire procedure.
During your sedation consultation appointment, you will have the opportunity to discuss and ask questions about IV sedation and other alternative modes of treatment.
